second pitch

      Second pitch to Martin

I had my second pitch to Martin Tucker today. I showed him what i already had for my slide show. At the moment, where there is meant to be video's i just have red writing explaining what the video is about as i haven't actually got round to filming it yet. Martin said that the slide show was interesting as it had lots of photographs and an interesting approach of the college, but he said it was hard to take it all in as it was just a slide show of pictures, so i am going to write a script to go along with my slide show to explain it all in more detail.

market research

Market research
Past promotional products for the college have been prospectus's, pens, posters, mini Penwith college cardboard buses, radio ads. The first prospectus's are of poor quality and are not interesting. As the years progressed the prospectus became better designed, more involved into explaining subjects the college provided and more attractive.
Here a 4 different Penwith college prospectus's from different years. As you can see as time has progressed so has the quality and style of the prospectus. however the 2003 one looks alot different and worse than the 1996 one in my opinion!

Today i interviewed Marie Walton, head of marketing for Penwith college, she told me lots of marketing techniques that she use's to promote the college. She designs the college prospectus' has stalls promoting the college on events such as Mazy day. She organizes open events and school events. She told me that key marketing techniques are to be positive and confident about what you are promoting and to show quality in the college.  She said if you show quality and confidence people will be more likely to come to this college and believe what you are saying about the college.
She try's to make the promotional materials interesting and appeal to young people but it also had to impress parents as well.

target auidence

Target Audience

My target audience is year 10 and 11 students from schools who are now choosing their options. This is my audience because these people are the next to move on to college. They want to go somewhere that offers them  course that they really want to do and that they are going to enjoy. They also want the atmosphere and the people of the college to be nice and friendly. to promote this to them i can't just drone on with words, i need bright, easy to understand presentations, activities and video's etc to promote the college.
I need to consider what technology my target audience use or what they have access to. Young people these day's are considered as the "youtube generation." They like all their information to be instant. The internet now has sites such as "4OD" and "BBC iplayer" where you can  watch TV programs online whenever you want. 80% of the households in Britain are connected to the internet, so this would be the best way to show them my presentation. How ever i am doing my presentation one on one to the pupils. But i could speak to the administrator of the Penwith college website to see if i could get it put on their.

proposal

Proposal
I have been commissioned by Martin Tucker to create a presentation to give to year 10 and 11 students on their open day at Penwith college. The presentation has to give a students perspective of the college. Martin is going to give his presentation first before i take over.
I know Martin want me to show the college of in an entertaining and different perspective. A way in which students will be drawn in and will not find it boring. To do this i am going to use a range of different medias from photography, to video's and music videos. I am going to cover a majority of the different subjects in the college.
I am going to give my presentation across as a power point. That way there will not be lots of writing and i can explain what is on the slides. It will be easier to get across tot he students if i make a presentation with little text and more use of pictures and videos. Teenagers tend to get bored easily but lots of writing and talking. I also feel i am reaching students on a more personal level if i am talking to them face to face.
Another reason for using powerpoint is that i can talk over it. I can make it more interesting and draw people into what i say. If i use the communication skills i have learnt in Harveys lessons i can make my presentation different, enthusiastic and more interesting.
My final reason for choosing powerpoint is that i can adapt the other subject i take to it. I can use the skills i  learn in photography to take more interesting photographs that have been edited in a nice professional way to make the powerpoint more interesting. I can also use the skills i have gained from the national award in music to put into my powerpoint to cover the subject of music.
There are many different tasks and activities i need to carry out during this project. I need to make sure i keep up to date with my blog with what i do each day for the project. Any market research i do, any interviews, ideas boards or story boards. I need to make sure i do my market research before i begin making my project so that i have as much background information and guidelines as possible. I need to do several pithes to keep the relationship with my client strong, and so i can show him the projects process and he cang ive me any input on what he likes, doesn't like and what he thinks i can improve.
I need to go out and photograph students working and take different landscape shots of the college. I also need to edit these photographs on photoshop, so that when i put them in my blog people are interested in them. The same goes for filming the college and interviewing people. I need to make sure these videos are full of interesting shots and are edited together well. The editing is another activity i need to make sure i complete.
Finally, i need to put the actual presentation together. I am going to use Microsoft powerpoint to do this and include all my pictures, videos and films on one powerpoint presentation.
The resources i am going to use to get information for my presentation are college lectures and present college students. I am going to pick up small bits of information from these people on what the think about the college and what they know about the college. I am also going to use my own knowledge of the college and give my own input. I will also be using the internet for my research and Penwith college moodle.

pitch

Pitch to Martin
Today i had my pitch to Martin Tucker. I told him my idea of wanting to go to a secondary school and promote the college with a  slide show, video's and display boards of students work. Martin thought this was a very good idea. He liked the fact that i was reaching the students on a more personal level.
He suggested to me that instead of going to schools to present the college i should do it on their open days. He said that he will do an opening speech with his perspective on Penwith College, then i will do a speech with a students perspective. I explained that i didn't want to just give a speech, as i knew students wouldn't be very interested in it. I said i wanted to give examples of the work the college does and a more relaxed approach to what the college is all about.
This has really helped me with what am am going to do. I now need to write a proposal explaining what i am going to do. Then i can start making the presentation and gathering a collection of peoples work from all the different areas in college.

introduction and planning

This next unit is all about working with a client to create a finished product to a professional standard. I have been commissioned to advertise and promote the college. I have been commissioned to do this by Martin Tucker, the college director.
Martin wants me to promote every aspect of the college and attract new students.. He wants me to produce interesting and innovative promotional materials to advertise the college. The unique selling point of my company is that i am going to reach students on a more personal level. I am going to visit schools and talk to students face to face about the collegea, instead of just advertising through radio or as a poster. However the company will also have these aspects.
Martin wants the product to be created in a range of different medias, from visual, to audio, and from freebies to presentations. He wants the outcome to be creative and different to attract more pupils.
This unit is all about the relationship between me and the client. I have to deliver a quality product that reaches out to the demands of the brief.

My first job is to map out any ideas that i have. Then select the best idea's and pitch them to Martin Tucker, the director of the college. The idea's need to show a creative aspect and inventive promotional materials which is going to make students want to come to Penwith college. I need to take into consideration my target audience which is year 10 and 11 pupils of a secondary school (15-16 years of age) so all my idea's need to be colorful, loud, not to much text on posters, and they need to be able to enjoy and understand what im saying.

Here is a scanned in picture of my first mind map of ideas.
From my design board, the two ideas that i think will be most effective and that i am most likely to pitch to Martin Tucker are; Going to a secondary school to promote the college to year 11 and 10 students. I think this will be a good idea because not only is this an advertising method. I will get to create video's, handouts and get students more involved in what its all about instead of them just reading a poster without any extra information.
The second idea that i will probably pitch is the Radio advert. I think this will be a good idea because it will reach a larger audience instead of me just doing a presentation to school pupils.
Both of these audiences are important to advertise to. School students because they will soon be making their decisions about college. Yet on the radio, older youths who decided not to go to college will here it being advertised and may take an interest.
I could adapt my other ideas into these to ideas. For example, i can give out key rings with the Penwith college logo on it at the school. However i would have to see how much budget i could get to play with. A poster would also be a good idea to make as it is good promoting and isn't as time consuming.

It is important that the target audience is able to access the promotional products i use. for example if i made a web page, would all students have web access to view it. This is why i have chosen to visit a school  to advertise the product. This is on a more personal level than a website. The same thing goes with the poster. Although this isn't very personal, it is shown all over town and people will see it. As i said above if it is interesting, informative and attractive people will be drawn in and will want to buy it.
